As a leader aren't you tired of being the one who has to have all the answers or the only one that cares?  Or that you have to solve every problem. That was not God’s original design. His original design in the garden was partnership.   I Corinthians 13:9 says “…we all know in part,” the Passion Translation says it this way, we all have “a fragment.” So, whatever you know, you only know in part. God is guiding us to the answer in partnership by not allowing one person to hold all the answers. Most leadership courses are just about making YOU a better leader, this one redefines leadership and teaches you to partner with the human resources all around you! 

Multiple Intelligence in the Bible

The Bible already knew about multiple intelligences. Solomon’s wisdom was so expansive that the Bible describes it like the “sand that is on the seashore” (I Kings 4:29, NASB).  God matched the overwhelming amount of people under Solomon’s leadership with the provision of an overwhelming amount of intelligence resources – wisdom AND understanding.  Intelligence was given in the midst of relationships. That’s the people around you…the collective contribution within your friendships, family, organization…even your enemies.

More Than Words - Linguistic Intelligence in Peter of the Bible

The apostle Peter found in the New Testament is a great example of someone operating in Linguistic Intelligence. Peter is “an apostle of Jesus Christ and one of the three named pillars of the early church in Jerusalem. Peter gets a bad reputation in the Bible as the disciple who kept putting his foot in his mouth. Maybe that is the first evidence that Peter loves words…he had a deep need to articulate in powerful moments.

Intelligence is God’s idea. He desires us to know and celebrate who we are, the gifts, callings, and the purposes in our lives. Seeing this intelligence in yourself and others joins that celebration and encourages yourself and others to operate in it.  One theory revolves around leaders being born with leadership traits while another argues that leadership traits can be developed. Dr. Irini’s research data showed that 80% of the case study’s multiple intelligences were developed versus being born with them.

Deborah is best known as one of the judges in ancient Israel’s history. The Israelites had been oppressed for 20 years under a Canaanite king.  She takes on the role of military advisor and leader. There are multiple intelligences that Deborah operates in. In this chapter we will focus on how she utilizes Logic/Mathematical Intelligence.

People who operate in Logic/Mathematical intelligence are more than those who ask the question, “Show me the numbers;” Dr. Irini reminds us that we need logic/mathematical intelligence in our homes, churches, businesses and organizations. These individuals that operate in this intelligence drive teams to observe the organizational patterns to inform decision-making in the organization.

More Than Emotions – Emotional Intelligence in David

Emotional Intelligence (EI) is the “the ability to monitor one's own and others' feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them and to use this information to guide one's thinking and actions.” EI is a very hot topic right now, unfortunately it is being used not to relationally connect, but to relationally control and manipulate people through emotions.   Gardner had two categories for this intelligence intrapersonal and interpersonal intelligence.   Intrapersonal intelligence is the inward “access to one’s own feeling life” to discriminate your feelings – label, code, and draw upon them to affect your behavior.   Interpersonal intelligence draws outward to individuals and is the “ability to notice and make distinctions among other individuals and, in particular, among their moods, temperaments, motivations, and intentions.”

More Than Emotions – Emotional Intelligence in David of the Bible

Dr. Irini teaches about David who becomes the second king of Israel. The Bible describes David as a “shepherd, military leader, king, but he was also a “poet and musician.” David’s Emotional Intelligence that contributed to a title we all desire, “a man after [God’s] own heart” (I Samuel 13:14).

Emotional Intelligence has been popularized in organizations thanks to a guy named Goldman who made it applicable in the business setting. Unfortunately, Goldman defined it in ways to be able to manage people instead of inviting people to the table of contribution by seeing Emotional Intelligence as more than a manipulation tool. We live in a world where people have minimized the definition of intelligence out of their own insecurity. They just did not believe that the table of contribution could be so large. And to be honest, without God we all shrink the table of contribution, no matter how hard you try.

Knowledge Intelligence includes the accumulated general information that remains in long-term memory. Most often this intelligence is assessed as a part of your IQ, which includes “fluid reasoning, knowledge, quantitative reasoning, visual-spatial processing and working memory.

Dr. Irini discusses in this chapter how the New Testament apostle Paul used his knowledge intelligence. The Bible first introduces Paul as a passionate Pharisee that was on a mission to hunt down and kill new believers following Jesus Christ as he believed that they were against the True God of Israel. Pharisees were members of the Jewish party that followed the law of Moses found in the Pentateuch. The Pentateuch is a fancy name for the first five books of the Bible (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy). They were very strict. SO what does this have to do with Paul’s life?

We need Knowledge Intelligence at the table of contribution. There is so much information that is required in every problem-solving and brainstorming meeting. The knowledge we bring to the tables of conversation, problem-solving, and brainstorming should build people up. If we are not careful we can use Knowledge Intelligence to diminish people or devalue other people’s contributions. Knowledge used intelligently does not make people choose sides, but builds a bridge to understanding both sides.

Temporal Intelligence includes harnessing the “power of the past, present, and future.” Temporal intelligence defines the leader’s awareness and application of timing as a variable within leadership scenarios. Time is a resource. Not only the time that is present, but the stewardship of learning from the past and as a result affect the future.

He works from the end to the beginning, He unlocks understanding about time that effects our choices, and sets up divine appointments that invite us to partner with Him.

Cultural Intelligence is “an individual’s capability to function and manage effectively in culturally diverse settings” which can be in physical or organizational cultures. Culture includes both international cultural and organizational culture.

Ruth is one of two women that have a book of the Bible named after her. She is also one of the 5 women mentioned in the genealogy of Jesus in Matthew 1. That may sound common to us as we listen with our 21st century’s cultural ears, but women were not listed in genealogies, only men. It would also be strange for Ruth to be highlighted in Jesus’ genealogy because she was from one of Israel’s enemies, the Moabites.

There are a buffet of cultures around us from political, spiritual, ethnic, racial, emotional, medical, sexual, mental, and yes the physical ones. Culture is everywhere in a literal ethnic sense and in all the other ones I just mentioned as well. The need for someone with Cultural Intelligence at the table has never been more critical. But remember, we are not victims of culture, we are influencers over it. Culture is ours to steward.

More Than the Seen – Spiritual Intelligence in Joseph

The last intelligence we are exploring is Spiritual Intelligence. Spiritual Intelligence is the employment of the unseen, “the inner life of the mind and spirit and its relationship to being in the world.” I invite you to open your Bible with me and let’s turn to the Old Testament Book of 1 Kings 4: 29 NASB  “Now God gave Solomon wisdom and very great discernment and breadth of mind, like the sand that is on the seashore.” 

More Than What's Seen – Spiritual Intelligence in Joseph of the Bible

The story of Joseph is found in Genesis 37, he is seventeen and his mother has passed away and we find out that Jacob loves Joseph more than all of his other children and lets that dysfunction be made known by giving ONLY him an expensive coat of many colors. To no surprise this creates animosity between the children.   Joseph has a dream. This is our first time seeing Joseph encounter the spiritual, unseen realm. He shares it with his older brothers (Gen. 37:5). For Spiritual Intelligence to be in full operation, it has to be connected to the right source – God. This is the beginning of seeing Joseph grow into Spiritual Intelligence and it gives hope to all of us working out our Spiritual Intelligence as well.

We are talking about Spiritual Intelligence which is the employment of the unseen, “the inner life of the mind and spirit and its relationship to being in the world.”   Yes, that's a generic academic definition, but you have to realize that the secular academic world does not really like to integrate the spiritual into their system.   In turn, that means there are a lot of systems and organizations that are primarily built around natural, what you can see systems. But God awakens us to realize that there is more than one system – the world’s and God’s. In the world’s system we are dependent on human wisdom, in God’s system we are dependent on spiritual wisdom.  Take that fact in, there are different types of wisdom that you can operate from – human or spiritual. You have human intelligences, but even more so, you have a spiritual intelligence.  I Corinthians 2:12-14 says, “For we did not receive the spirit of this world system but the Spirit of God, so that we might come to understand and experience all that grace has lavished upon us. And we articulate these realities with the words imparted to us by the Spirit and not with the words taught by human wisdom. We join together Spirit-revealed truths with Spirit-revealed words.   Someone living on an entirely human level rejects the revelations of God’s Spirit, for they make no sense to him. He can’t understand the revelations of the Spirit because they are only discovered by the illumination of the Spirit” (TPT).   We all need this intelligence in us and we all need each other to help us develop those around us. How can we develop and apply this intelligence in our own life as well as those around us?
