We’ve all been in a rut at least once in our lives. At a place where motivation is non-existent. Where we find ourselves asking the question - why?
Why this job? Why this marriage? Why this fitness goal?
Sometimes it feels impossible to dig deep and find the energy, courage or the reason to keep going. In John Moreland’s daily devotional, Just Keep Going, he explores the place where he knows he’s most likely to hit a wall - his military PT test.
Learn from John as he takes us through his process of finding motivation in a much simpler way than you might expect.
Can I ask you a question? Are you willing to just keep going?
In Galatians 6:9, Paul writes these words. "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest, if we do not give up."
Notice what he did not say. He didn't say, if you’re a biblical genius, you'll reap a harvest. He also didn’t say, if you do these specific things, you’ll reap a harvest.
There's no command in here to change the world.
Paul simply says, if you don't get tired and if you just keep going, when the time is right, you'll reap a harvest and you'll bear fruit.
That's another way of saying you'll reach your goal. The outcome that God desires will happen, what you're pursuing will come to pass if you just keep going.
I’ve been in the military for about 25 years. Every year, the military makes us do what’s called a PT test. This is a physical test or evaluation that includes running, push-ups, sit-ups, etc..
What have I learned in the last 25 years? I am not built for running. My feet are flat, my knees hurt, my hips hurt, I have hardware in my spine. I am over it. My PT goal at this point in my life is this - I want to not have a heart attack. I also want to keep up with my two sons and I want to pass my PT test every year. Those are the extent of my physical fitness goals.
But these last 25 years have taught me something else. When it comes to the running portion of the test, I’ve learned that if I just keep going, I'll pass. I don't have to break any records. I don't have to sprint. I just need to stay the course. It doesn’t matter how slow I'm running, and trust me, I’ve tested this on more than one occasion. I’ve learned that if I just keep going, I'll pass.
Sometimes the most difficult thing you can do is to just keep running.
Maybe you're in your office sitting at your desk right now. You're frustrated about the project that you've been working on for the last year and you're wondering, will I ever make any progress?
Or maybe it’s something a little closer to home - your marriage. You might be saying, "Man, I am tired of him. I am tired of her." Or maybe you're looking at life and saying, "I'm just tired of living." You might be contemplating something as drastic as suicide. If that’s you, I beg you, just keep running.
I know it feels like you're hitting the same wall.
I know it feels like you're turning the same corner.
I know it feels like you're making the same lap.
For me, it was running the track in the military. Seeing that same tree or the same building over and over again. But as you look at life today and feel like you’re stuck in limbo, just keep running.
Here’s the challenge I’d like to leave you with. Pick up your phone and send a text to yourself with a goal that you were working on, but you quit. You stopped running.
I want you to ask yourself this question as you're processing it.
Did God really say no? Do you believe you're incapable of achieving whatever that goal was? Is it outside of your scope of reality or ability, or did you just give up on it?
Get back to running.
God, I pray that you help me continue going. In the times that life feels monotonous, give me strength and discipline. Help me to recommit to the race and keep running. In Jesus' name, amen.
